Meet Our Team

Angela C. Orta, LMSW

Founder, The Illuminated Mind
Angela C Orta

Therapy is a time for delving deep into the truth of who we really are. Sometimes we find ourselves unable to build or maintain fulfilling, meaningful connections with others or ourselves. Yet, it is our willingness to look into the void that moves us toward change because who we really are is always calling us home. This is one of the reasons I love my work - helping people rediscover their sacredness and creating a space that envisages the freedom to be our whole selves is the best job in the world.

I work with individuals, couples, and families with a focus on personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span. Through the integration of theory, research, and practice, and with a sensitivity to multicultural issues, I strive to help people improve their well-being, alleviate distress & maladjustment, resolve crises, and increase their ability to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Areas of special interest include women in transition, mindfulness, body/self-esteem, depression, anxiety, sexual trauma/sexual abuse, PTSD, relationship conflict, divorce/remarriage, infidelity, eating disorders, acute & chronic illness, and grief & loss.

When I’m not at work you can find me investing my energy in things that feed my spirit. I'm a big family person and pride myself on spending as much time as I can with my loved ones. I enjoy nature, hiking, hanging out by the pool with a good book & music, and tending to my plants and flowers. I love learning about different cultures and I travel as much as possible – I usually get to Arizona at least once a year. I am a huge animal lover and my current obsession is loving on & riding my Belgian draft horse Leviathan and cuddling with my Saint Bernard Atlas or my blue merle Collie Thor.

Education: I received my Master’s degree in Social Work and my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Michigan State University .

I understand that people experience life through the lens of their own unique stories and experiences. Our individual experiences, while rooted in the common soil of human development, provide us with the foundation to make the personal choices that serve us best in building meaningful connections, improving relationships, managing stress, pursuing our chosen goals, and increasing our overall satisfaction with life.

I use Integrative therapy tools and techniques in my work with adolescents, adults, and couples - allowing me to consider the individual characteristics, preferences, needs, abilities, and challenges of each individual client and their presenting concern(s). By combining elements drawn from different schools of psychological theory & research, I aim to be more flexible & inclusive, making therapy something to look forward to.

I have over 30 years of background, skills, and experience working with adolescents, adults, & families. I am certified in both Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Areas of special interest include depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, working with adolescents, anger management, behavioral issues, trauma, PTSD, work related stress, and men’s issues.

In my free time I like to spend my time golfing, walking my dogs, being a dad, and playing Papa to my six grandchildren. I have a love for Michigan State Spartans Men’s basketball, College sports, Lake Michigan, and long road trips.

Education: I received my Master’s degree in Social Work and my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology & Criminal Justice from Michigan State University .
